Varlet is set to release on August 28 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam, Epic). The western versions will launch on August 27 due to worldwide launch timing, with the release timing details provided in FuRyu's press release below.
FuRyu Corporation, an esteemed Japanese video game and entertainment company, today announced that Varlet, an all-new high school RPG, will release for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch system on Aug. 27, 2025 in North America and Europe, at 8:00 a.m. PDT and 4:00 p.m. BST respectively, aligning all territories for a simultaneous global release. The developer and publisher also released an English subtitled version of their latest pre-launch trailer for Varlet, providing an extended overview of the setting, a deeper look at the turn-based combat and school-based adventure gameplay, and an opportunity to learn more about other members of Kousei Academy players will encounter.
At the core of Varlet’s experience is its dynamic Triad Stats system, which shapes character progression based on player choices. These six distinct attributes are divided between Light and Dark Triad traits; light Triad stats emphasize morality, sympathy, and altruism, while Dark Triad stats lean into Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. Throughout their days at school players will encounter a variety of situations where they will need to make a decision on how to respond or proceed, with each decision point contributing towards the protagonist’s own Triad. This can potentially provide the protagonist with additional options in combat, with the Dark Triad unlocking powerful new skills and the Light Triad providing potent buffs to support allies, or unlock special new choices normally unavailable during the main scenario.
Welcome within the halls of Kousei Academy, the first school to implement the cross-reality, virtual reality network known as “Johari”, which is used for everything from finding basic information and making purchases to serving as a social networking and messaging app. The app has resulted in a marked increase in user’s desire for approval and attention amongst peers, and soon an urban legend begins circulating about users disappearing into otherworldly “Glitches” if those desires grow too strong. And worse yet, monsters inhabiting the “Glitches” are said to replace users in the real world leaving everyone none the wiser.
The protagonist soon discovers that this urban legend is very real and some students have already been replaced by monsters, forcing them to take a stand. As a member of the Student Support Services (SSS), a guild dedicated to solving the academy’s troubles, players must guide their friends, strengthen bonds, and fight to protect the school from impending doom. However, navigating these relationships comes with its own challenges - getting too close to multiple people may lead to unexpected consequences.
