Final Fantasy IX animated series seemingly back in production at a new French studio with a 2028 release target

Back in 2021, an animated series based on Final Fantasy IX was announced from Paris-based animation company Cyber Group Studios. Following Cyber Group Studios' closure earlier this year, the Final Fantasy IX anime series is seemingly back in production at a new studio with a 2028 release target.

This news was reportedly in the new issue of Écran Total, a French magazine covering the business side of the film and TV industry. Écran Total's report appears to state that, following the closure of Cyber Group Studios, Euro Visual will now be handling the anime series.

Mel, Kolm, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last black mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of Alexandria, guarded by its rather friendly, though sometimes very curious, inhabitants. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not to last... One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could this be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them? "

The listing notes that it will be a 2D animated show aimed at children aged between 6 and 13 years of age. It'll consist of thirteen episodes, each running 22 minutes.

The plot details in the summary also match directly with a leak from earlier this year that discovered information about the FF9 anime project from when it was being done by Cyber Studios Group thanks to production materials posted online by former Cyber Studios employees after the company's dissolution. It seems the new producers are running with the same previously-developed ideas for the show.

Final Fantasy IX is now available on PS4 (and backward compatible on PS5), Xbox One (and backward compatible on Xbox Series X|S), Nintendo Switch (and backward compatible on Nintendo Switch 2), iOS, Android, Steam, and the Xbox Store for PC. Check out our guides covering FF9 here.
