Cygames' Project Awakening is still under development, now known using Unreal Engine 5
Japanese outlet CGWorld published a new article that confirms Cygames is still working on Project Awakening. The latter company is also still seeking more staff members to help develop the AAA game project, which has since been confirmed to be made with Unreal Engine 5.
Although the outlet interviewed three managers from Cygames, most of the important quotes came from Tomino Kimihiro, the manager of the Consumer Designer Team, which consists of "artists in charge of developing console games" (As a reminder, Consumer is a term for "consoles" in the Japanese gaming scene)
CGWorld: Please tell us the tools that are used by the Consumer Designer Team.
Tomino: For the game engine, we are adopting Unreal Engine 5. As for DCC tools, we are proactively implementing the newest technologies, starting with the likes of Maya and Houdini. Right now we are in the midst of creating the quality line, so I'm thinking we'll want to have it evolve while we're doing various kinds of challenges.
At the end of this interview, Tomino also made a statement that his team is determined to release Project Awakening with the intention of putting it as a Game of the Year award candidate for the year they eventually release the game:
Tomino: [...] Project Awakening is still in a phase where we are probing deeply into its quality. As a world-class AAA title, we are also seriously aiming for it to get "Game of the Year", so we are awaiting people who are fired up to lend their strength for this big challenge.
We first learned of Project Awakening when it was revealed via a PlayStation Lineup Tour held before the Tokyo Game Show inĀ September 2018. However, the earliest the project was announced was in 2016, so there would be 10 years have passed since the first reveal. We last saw an update for the project in late 2021.
