Which is the best version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven? PS5, Switch 2, PC, Xbox, & More Compared

Square Enix's Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven recently launched for Xbox Series X|S as a Play Anywhere title following its Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade and major patch release. After tackling Final Fantasy IX for its 25th anniversary going over every versionthe Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster seriesChrono Trigger for its 30th anniversary, and Triangle Strategy, I've revisited Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven across all of its versions to compare visuals, performance, features, load times, and more across different platforms.

In this feature, I'm going to cover Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven for Switch, the Switch 2 Edition, Steam version on Steam Deck, Steam version on ROG Ally, Xbox version on Xbox Series X, the Xbox on PC version on ROG Ally, the PS5 version, and the PS4 version (via its demo) on PS5. This feature focuses on Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven and not the original game also available on consoles, PC, and mobile.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven release timeline

Before getting to the versions and other differences, I'm going to cover the release timeline for Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven across platforms from its debut to its most recent platform launch.

  • October 2024: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a full remake of Romancing SaGa 2, releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam.
  • July 2025: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases with an upgrade path  for existing Switch owners.
  • September 2025: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven arrives on Xbox platforms as a Play Anywhere title for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.

With Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3, Square Enix ported the games over to basically every platform available. Since then, we saw some SaGa games skip Xbox or mobile releases at launch. With Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven's Xbox platform launch, the incredible remake of a fantastic RPG is now on all current platforms barring mobile. Given that every recent SaGa project has been released on mobile, I expect Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven to hit iOS and Android at some point in the future and I will be updating this article with mobile impressions whenever that happens.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven feature differences across platforms

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is at feature parity across platforms and all versions have the new 1.1.0 update content included. The Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases shipped with the 1.1.0 update content while the PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC versions were patched with it in July this year. Any differences in features across Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on consoles and PC now have to do with the platform-specific features offered and technical differences. I've listed the former below:

  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Switch: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven was the most-polished SaGa release on Switch 1 with good performance and visuals for the hybrid console all things considered when played both docked and handheld. In addition to not suffering from major issues, this version also has a paid upgrade option if you own a Nintendo Switch 2 with save data carrying over.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition improves on the Nintendo Switch version with a big visual and performance upgrade. It also lets you bring your save data back and forth across Switch versions.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5 and PS4: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5 and PS4 feature Trophy support, activity card tracking on PS5, cross buy, and also Remote Play support.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox is a Play Anywhere title letting you access it on your Xbox Series console and Windows 11 device with saves syncing across. It also supports Quick Resume and has achievements.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Steam: The Steam version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven supports much higher frame rates than the consoles and it also plays perfectly on Steam Deck and PC handhelds with Steam Cloud support and achievements.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven visuals and performance differences across PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, PC, PS4, and Switch

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is by far the most-polished modern SaGa release on consoles and PC. While there have been others like SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered that have no issues on any system, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a full 3D remake in Unreal Engine targeting multiple consoles and PC. Thankfully, Square Enix and developer xeen delivered a game that ran and looked fantastic on PS5 and PC, but also one that ended up impressing me with its Nintendo Switch version last year. I hadn't played the PS4 version until recently, but Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven has always been an RPG I recommended regardless of platform before. For those who have yet to play it though and for those who own multiple platforms, I'm going to cover the visual and performance differences across PS5, PS4, Xbox, PC, Switch, and Switch 2 here.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven targets 30fps on Switch, but 60fps on all other consoles. The PC version on the other hand has support for multiple frame rate targets and an unlimited option. Both my Steam Decks and ROG Ally have no trouble running it at 60fps (in the case of the LCD Steam Deck) or well above that target. In terms of performance, the PS5, PS4 (on PS5), and Xbox Series X versions are the most stable on the console side. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition still appears to be using some dynamic scaling with similar LOD, but it looks much better on Switch 2 than playing the Switch 1 version without any upgrade.

PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Switch 2, and Switch Docked compared

Note: For the comparison above, I captured Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5, the PS4 demo on PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch 1 docked, and Switch 2 Edition docked using my 4K capture card and then cropped three specific screenshots from each platform to show the differences.

While the Switch 2 Edition does hit 60fps most of the time in the bits I replayed to check from the opening when I was comparing both Switch versions, it can drop a little below 60fps in busier areas. The drops are less noticeable when playing handheld though on Switch 2. Right now, the 1.1.0 update is the latest version available for all systems and it sadly still has a few bugs that sometimes occur. These involve the motion blur toggle not working correctly until you enable or disable it and change another setting to force it to save correctly. I also ran into this on Xbox Series X.

Even now, the PC version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the most-optimized of the lot with handhelds like the Steam Deck being able to run it at frame rates above 60fps. It feels like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2 Edition could've offered a 120fps performance mode option. The minor performance issues aside, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a massive upgrade over the Switch version, and it is well worth buying for handheld play. Even with dynamic resolution, it looks excellent on the Switch 2 screen compared to the Steam Deck version which can run at a much higher and more consistent frame rate than Switch 2.

ROG Ally, Switch 2, Steam Deck, and Switch handheld compared

Note: For the comparison above, I captured Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Steam Deck and ROG Ally using Steam's screenshot functionality with PNG output and then the Switch and Switch 2 Edition handheld using the system capture for Switch and Switch 2 since there is no way to capture handheld Switch 2 gameplay yet.

Before getting to load times, the PC followed by PS5 and Xbox Series X deliver the best visual experience for Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. The Switch 2 Edition could've used some anti-aliasing or better post-processing though, but it is still a great upgrade. I just hope the few performance issues can be addressed in a potential update. At this point, I don't recommend playing the PS4 or Switch versions if you have access to newer hardware since the upgrades (especially in load times in the case of PS4 as I cover below) are very good. If you play on a 1440p monitor, the Switch 2 version looks great, but some anti-aliasing would've helped a lot since there are quite a few jagged edges on some characters and in the environment.

I want to stress once again that despite the differences and minor technical issues on Switch and Switch 2, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a great experience across all consoles and PC including handhelds. I just hope some patches are still in the works to iron out these small issues.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven load times across Switch 2, PS5, Steam, Xbox, Xbox on PC, Switch, and PS4

When testing the load times in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, I measured the time taken to get to the title screen from the dashboard and also loading a save file until you get control of the character. I mashed A/X/B to speed up the process on all platforms. For this test, I had Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven installed on the internal storage on PS5, the PS4 demo on an external hard drive on PS5, the Switch version on my Switch OLED SD card, the Switch 1 version on the Switch 2 internal storage (before the patch from my SaGa Switch 2 backward compatibility feature), the Xbox version on the Xbox Series X internal storage, the Xbox on PC version on the ROG Ally internal storage, the Steam version on the ROG Ally internal storage, and the Steam version on my Steam Deck OLED internal storage.

Platform / Test Dashboard to title Loading a save
Switch 26 24-25
Switch on Switch 2 15 9
Switch 2 Edition 12-13 10-11
Steam Deck 17 7-8
ROG Ally Steam 10 6-7
ROG Ally Xbox 30-35 5-6
Xbox Series X 18-19 5-6
PS4 12-13 20
PS5 5 4-5

Note: All load times above are in seconds. The Switch on Switch 2 data is from before the 1.1.0 update, but all the other data is with the most-recent and updated versions of the game across platforms.

As you can see, the PS5 version loads the fastest across the board. The Switch version on Switch 2 and the native Switch 2 Edition are also much faster than the Switch version on Switch or the PS4 version when played off an external hard drive. Having tested many games now that have Xbox on PC versions, I hope Microsoft can speed up the syncing and boot process for these games because there isn't a single game that does not have much faster initial launch times on Steam compared to the Xbox on PC or Microsoft Store versions. All versions barring the Switch and PS4 have fast loading within gameplay with the PS5 version being the fastest of the lot.

Which version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the best?

Taking into account the visuals, performance, and load times, the best version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is on PC followed by the PS5 version for playing on your TV and monitor. For handheld play, if you want the best possible frame rate at all times, the Steam version on Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally are the way to go. If you want higher resolution visuals and can tolerate some minor performance issues, the Switch 2 version is a better experience alongside the ROG Ally which delivers 1080p and higher frame rates without issue right now, but the screen is not as good as the Steam Deck OLED..

Beyond that, each platform has a caveat or two, but no version is a bad experience right now. I do think the PS4 and Switch 1 versions are less than ideal experiences right now though. When I compared Triangle Strategy and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, the Switch versions had caveats with poor scaling on higher resolutions or worse performance. With Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, you have to tolerate minor performance issues and more jagged edges on Switch 2, but you get a great experience overall. The Xbox Series X version only suffers with its initial load, but you can get around this with Quick Resume. Just keep in mind that Quick Resume will cause some issues if you play across a PC handheld and sync back. I ran into some issues here.

Which version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven should you buy today?

Everyone has their own priorities for what they want, so I'm going to list the advantages and disadvantages of every single version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven as a conclusion to this feature below:

  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Strategy on Switch: The original release is still solid on Switch both docked and handheld, but it isn't the best way to play it. Thankfully a Switch 2 Edition paid upgrade is available at $9.99 with save data carrying over. You could also just play the Switch version on Switch 2 and benefit from faster loading through backward compatibility if you'd like, but the visuals are definitely not ideal on the 1080p screen handheld. I definitely recommend upgrading, but the Switch version lets you also own a physical copy of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven since it has no Switch 2 Edition physical release right now.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Nintendo Switch 2: If you upgrade or buy this version directly on the eShop, you get a fantastic handheld version and a great docked experience that only suffer thanks to some jagged edges and minor performance issues. This is still one of the best upgrades for a Switch 1 game on Switch 2.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Steam: If you play on Steam Deck or PC in general, this is the only version you should consider. It plays fantastic on Steam Deck out of the box and is a very good PC release with support for much higher frame rates than the PS5 and Xbox versions.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5: If you want to play on your TV, care about trophy support, and don't care about portable play (unless you stream to a PlayStation Portal or phone), this is the version to get. It is also the fastest version when it comes to load times above all other systems.
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox: If you have access to a PC handheld or play on Xbox Series consoles and PC, the Play Anywhere feature is a big selling point in addition to the Quick Resume feature on Xbox, but the longer initial load times thanks to the syncing holds this version back a bit.

Hopefully this helped you decide where you should play Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. If you haven't tried it yet, I recommend downloading the demo, but keep in mind that the Switch eShop demo is only the Switch 1 version and not the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is one of Square Enix's best and most-interesting RPG releases in years, and I'm glad to see it accessible on basically every system. Bring on the inevitable mobile port for me to test the iPhone and iPad versions in the future. Right now, regardless of where you play Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, you are getting a great to excellent experience.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is now available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC). Read our review of it here. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is now available on Nintendo Switch 2.
