The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - how to find and unlock the Color Dungeon in the Graveyard

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a classic, and Nintendo's recent Nintendo Switch remake of the game is no different. One thing longtime fans might want to know, however, is that the remake actually includes most of the content from the Link's Awakening DX re-release for the Gameboy Color - including the additional Color Dungeon, which includes new enemies, new puzzles, new bosses, and even a unique upgrade for Link!

Much like the rest of the content in Link's Awakening (2019), the way to access the content is more or less unchanged from its original incarnation - but in-case you don't remember how you found the Color Dungeon on the Gameboy Color or perhaps weren't even around when that game came out back in 1993, here are the steps you'll need to take in order to get to this unique and optional dungeon.

Just getting started? Check out our guide on how to get past the Raccoon in the Mysterious Forest with Magic Powder and how to steal from the village store to get the bow and arrow for free. If you're trying out the chamber dungeon creator, we've got a full guide on Amiibo unlocks and how to use them. We've also got a full guide on the trading sequence to unlock the Boomerang.

Where and How to Find the Color Dungeon

First things first - you're going to need to have cleared the 3rd dungeon, and have received the Pegasus Boots. Once you've done so, you can tackle the Color Dungeon at any time - with the caveat that the bosses might be a little tougher than you're used to, so keep that in mind.

You'll want to visit the library in Mabe Village and use the Pegasus Boots to ram into the bookshelf at the back of the room - knocking the red book hanging on top of it down. Inspecting the book will tell you that there's a secret in the cemetery, if you move the 5 tombstones in the bottom right corner of it in the right direction and order.

The order is as follows, going clockwise, starting from the bottom-center/bottom-right tombstone:

  • Bottom Middle Tombstone: Push Down
  • Bottom Left Tombstone: Push Left
  • Top Left Tombstone: Push Up
  • Top Middle Tombstone: Push Right
  • Top Right Tombstone: Push Up

Doing so in the right order will cause stairs leading underground to spawn, which lead directly to the Color Dungeon. If you can manage to clear its challenge, the player can choose to upgrade their tunic to either a red tunic that will buff their attack or a blue tunic that will buff their defense, effectively doubling your attack power or defensive strength.

Something to note here is that the Color Dungeon has actually been slightly overhauled this time around! None of the puzzles actually require you to be able to discern the differences in color, and indeed any of the puzzles that originally required this now also include a shape assigned to each color. Additionally, all of the hints that the Stone Owl will give you will now reference those shapes instead of their colors! Colorblind gamers have no need to worry - you can easily complete the dungeon without any problems.
