Pokemon Legends: Z-A Legendaries Guide - How to catch Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde

If you've already hit the credits for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you'd be forgiven for wondering how you're meant to catch the legendary Kalos Pokemon. While Zygarde briefly fights alongside you during the climax, you don't actually get the chance to catch it there and then; so, how do you add it to your team? Thankfully, while it does take a little bit of extra work, it's actually not that bad. First things first, you'll want to do one Reward Match as part of the postgame's Infinite Z-A Royale. Upon finishing your first match, you'll get contacted and told to return to Hotel Z. There, you'll be given some advice by L to seek out information about "the one who gives" and "the one who takes" - Xerneas and Yveltal, respectively. You'll want to speak to Mable and Grisham to gather more information about the two of the legendary Pokemon.

How to catch Xerneas

Speaking to Mable at the Pokemon Research Lab, she'll explain that there's been some anomalies within Wild Zone 3, 5 and 9. Especially powerful Alpha Pokemon have appeared, and may be linked to Xerneas. If you want to catch Xerneas, you'll need to take care of these Alphas first. The Pokemon in question are as follows:

  • Alpha Steelix, in Wild Zone 3
  • Alpha Gallade, in Wild Zone 5
  • Alpha Pangoro, in Wild Zone 9

All 3 of these Alphas are Level 70, a considerable jump from the end of the game. It may be worth putting things off for just a little bit if you find your party underleveled. Once you've dealt with all 3 of the anomalous Pokemon, return to Mable to learn that Xerneas is set to appear in Wild Zone 11. Simply head to the marker for the Main Mission "The One Who Gives" to find and battle Xerneas.

How to catch Yveltal

If you're after Yveltal, you'll want to speak to Grisham. After some dialogue, you'll get roped into a training regimen at Quasartico. In order to prepare for Yveltal's arrival, you'll be tasked with battling simulations of previous Rogue Mega Evolutions that you encountered during the story. Specifically, you'll be tasked with tackling Mega Victreebel, Mega Hawlucha and Mega Tyranitar. All 3 of these are now Level 70, and unlike during the story you'll be attempting them solo. If you didn't heed my advice earlier, definitely consider leveling up a bit now if you find yourself behind the curve.

Once you've dealt with the simulations, you'll be alerted that Yveltal is arriving in Lumiose. Head to the roof of Galerie de la Lune in the Rouge District to find Yveltal perched on top. Battle and capture it, much like with Xerneas.

How to catch Zygarde

Once you've dealt with both Xerneas and Yveltal, you can return to Hotel Z to report your successes. After doing so, L will challenge you to a Pokemon battle. He's no joke; his team is by far the toughest in the game, and you'll want to make sure you're around a level 80 average for your team if you aren't especially confident in your matchups. Once you've taken him down outside Hotel Z, he'll tell you that Zygarde awaits in Wild Zone 20. Head over, and prepare yourself for the game's final challenge.

Zygarde's battle is a 3-stage Rogue Mega Evolution-style gauntlet against 10% Zygarde, 50% Zygarde, and Zygarde Complete. With each phase, Zygarde will become even more aggressive and gain increased stats - your best bet is probably tackling things with Mega Gardevoir, or some other Fairy-type Mega Evolution. If you chose Chikorita as your starter, this is Meganium's time to shine! Once you've managed to take down Zygarde Complete, it will let itself be caught with whatever Poke Ball you deem fit.
