War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius shuts down in Japan on May 28
Square Enix has announced that they will end their services for War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in Japan on May 28 at 15:00 JST (UTC+9). This means the free-to-play mobile strategy RPG, as well as the whole Brave Exvius sub-series, will soon cease to exist in its entirety. The company has also immediately ceased sales for the game's paid currency.
While a similar end-of-service announcement had appeared almost exactly a year ago, that one only applied to the game's global English server. The global server had a lifespan of slightly over 5 years since its launch in March 2020 until its closure in May 2025. Meanwhile, the initial Japanese server launched in November 2019, meaning the game will have had a lifespan of 6.5 years for the Japanese version.
The game's producer Watanabe had also published a more detailed message explaining the Japanese server's end-of-service. He noted that the team had also considered creating an offline archive version of this game, but they ended up finding it difficult to implement it due to a lot of the game's features requiring an online connection, such as player interactions, versus, and guild content. The team is instead preparing other methods to retain access to the story, like memorial books and videos.
Despite this end-of-service announcement, Square Enix will still hold numerous Grand Finale events on the Japanese server of War of the Visions until the shutdown date. The company will also open a form on April 1-16, where existing Japanese players can vote for their favorite characters and register their own names to be listed in the endroll credits video that Square Enix will publish on May 28.
