Final Fantasy IX animated series officially in production at EuroVisual, titled Black Mages Legacy
the Final Fantasy IX animated series has resurfaced on the EuroVisual official website and is listed as in production.
Back in late December 2025, we had news about the Final Fantasy IX animated series through a French magazine covering the business side of the film and TV industry. Following that, the EuroVisual official website has now listed the anime, revealing it now has the title Black Mages Legacy.
It is listed with Season 1 in production and it will feature 10 episodes of 22 minutes each - a slight reduction from the previously-reported 13-episode count. No date is listed here, but it was reportedly set for a 2028 release target before.
It's been a rocky journey for the French-made animated series, which began life at a different studio that ultimately went into liquidation. After some time in the wilderness, the concept was picked up by a new production company. The series is a licensed affair, approved by Square Enix but without the game maker's direct involvement. It has previously been described as being aimed at children aged between six and thirteen years old, and takes place after the events of the game, following a group of Black Mages that are presumably the children of beloved FF9 character Vivi.
Final Fantasy IX is now available on PS4 (and backward compatible on PS5), Xbox One (and backward compatible on Xbox Series X|S), Nintendo Switch (and backward compatible on Nintendo Switch 2), iOS, Android, Steam, and the Xbox Store for PC. Check out our guides covering FF9 here.
